What Is a Digital Nomad Visa?

A digital nomad visa lets you live in a country legally while you keep earning from somewhere else. That last part is the whole point, and it is where most of the confusion starts, so it is worth being precise about what these permits do and do not allow.
The defining condition: your income comes from abroad
Every digital nomad visa rests on the same bargain. The country gives you residence; you bring income that was earned outside its borders and that does not compete with its own labour market. Your employer, your clients or your company sit somewhere else, and they keep paying you from there.
This is why programs ask for an employment contract or client invoices rather than a job offer. A work visa asks who will hire you locally. A digital nomad visa asks the opposite question: can you prove nobody local needs to.
What it is not
It is not permission to take a local job, and it is not a general work permit. Accepting employment from a company in the host country normally falls outside the visa's terms, whatever your job title is.
It is also not a tourist visa with a longer clock. A tourist entry usually forbids work of any kind and gives you no residence rights, no tax status and no route to anything further. And it is not citizenship: most programs are temporary permits that may or may not count toward permanent residence later.
What every program checks
The shape is consistent even though the numbers are not. Expect a minimum income floor, proof that the income is foreign-sourced and reasonably stable, health insurance valid for the stay, a clean criminal record, and a defined permit length with its own renewal rules.

Why some countries seem to have one but do not
Plenty of guides list countries that have never launched a dedicated program. What those countries often have is a different permit that remote workers use in practice - a self-employment route, a freelance permit, or a long-stay visitor status that tolerates foreign remote work.
That distinction matters when you apply, because the requirements and the risks are not the same. Pages here mark whether a country runs a real digital nomad program or only an alternative route, rather than implying a visa that does not exist.
