Does a Nomad Visa Lead to Residency?

This is the question that decides whether a digital nomad visa is a long stay or the first step of a move. The answer varies more than any other feature of these programs, and the popular shorthand - that the visa is a path to a second passport - is true in some countries and simply wrong in others.
Three different statuses people blur together
A visa is permission to enter for a purpose. A residence permit is authorisation to live somewhere for a defined period. Permanent residence is an indefinite right to stay, and naturalisation is citizenship. They are separate legal steps with separate qualifying rules.
A digital nomad visa sits at the second level, temporary by design. Whether it can escalate depends on whether its years are counted when you later apply for the third.
Whether the years count is the whole question
Some countries count time on a temporary permit toward the residence clock for permanent status or naturalisation. Others exclude certain permit categories from that clock entirely, so five years of lawful residence can produce no progress toward anything permanent.
This is rarely stated prominently in program marketing, and it is the single most consequential thing to verify if a long-term move is the actual goal. Verify it against the country's own nationality and immigration rules, not a visa comparison table.
Physical presence is where nomadic life collides with the rules
Naturalisation usually requires sustained physical presence, often with limits on how much time you may spend abroad each year. Someone using the visa the way its name suggests - as a base between travels - can hold the permit for years and still fail the presence test.
Language requirements, integration tests and minimum-income conditions at the point of application apply on top. The permit gets you into the queue; it does not exempt you from what the queue demands.
Rules in this area are being rewritten
Several countries have amended their residence and nationality timelines recently, and transitional provisions have caught out people who began under an older rule. A qualifying period quoted in a guide written last year may no longer be the one that applies to you.
