The first grant is the part everyone researches. Renewal is where people are caught out, because it is not an administrative formality - it is the same test again, applied to a life that has changed since you passed it the first time.
Renewal means qualifying again
Expect to re-prove income, insurance and a clean record, against the thresholds in force at renewal rather than the ones you met originally. Income floors indexed to a minimum wage or an average salary tend to rise, so a file that cleared the bar comfortably two years ago can sit under it now.
This matters most for freelancers whose income moves. If your earnings dipped during the permit, the renewal window is when that becomes visible, and the assessment usually looks at the recent period rather than your best year.
The initial grant and the total cap are separate limits
Programs usually publish two durations: how long the first permit lasts, and the maximum total time you can accumulate through renewals. A one-year permit inside a hard multi-year ceiling is a common shape.
When the ceiling is reached, the nomad visa route ends. Whether anything follows - a different permit, a residence status, nothing at all - depends on the country. The duration field on each page states the initial grant, whether it renews, and the total cap where one is published.
Time spent outside the country can count against you
Residence permits often carry minimum-presence expectations or rules about long absences, which sit awkwardly with a lifestyle built on mobility. Spending most of the permit elsewhere can weaken or end it.
These rules change, and they have been litigated recently in more than one country, so check the current position on the country page rather than relying on advice written a year ago.
By renewal, you are probably a tax resident
Most countries treat you as tax resident once you have been present beyond a threshold within a year, which typically arrives long before the first permit expires. Renewal is often the point where that status becomes administratively real - registrations, filings, sometimes local social security.
Any reduced-rate regime you claimed on arrival will have its own duration and conditions, which may not run as long as your permit does. Plan the tax position for year two before you plan the renewal appointment.
